Sir,

October November 1918.
With reference to the correspondence ending with your
Good letter No.33982, dated the 9th August, as the subject of proposed arrangements for the proportionate payment out of the surplus assets of the Calcutta, Hong Kong and Singapore branches of the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank of debts due by other branches .16 ted 12 of that bank to the British establishment of the Disconto- ly with closures.Gesellschaft, I an directed by the Secretary of State for India
in Council to forward for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies a copy of a letter from the Government of India proposing that the total debt now outatending should be paid forthwith from the surplus assets of the Calcutta branch, on the understanding that the Calcutta branch will be repaid such amounts as represent the proportions due from the Hong Kongend Singapore branches as soon as these amounts can be ascertained.
Mr.Montagu is prepared, if Mr.Long concurs, to authorise payment forthwith the the Disconto-Gesellschaft as proposed; but before doing so he desires to ascertain whether the arrangement proposed is still appropriate, and, if so, whether the total amount of the outstanding debts remaine as stated in the Government of India's letter.
As regards the first point, it is noted from the enclosures to your letter above quoted that the liquidation of the Hong Kong branch has now been completed; but it is not known in this Department what stage the liquidation of the Singapore branch has reached.
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
